April-20-2011--NEW YORK -- Oil prices jumped more than $3 Wednesday,
to above $111 a barrel, as the dollar weakened and a government report said US crude supplies fell last week.
After powering above $100 a barrel earlier this year,
oil prices have been trading at the highest levels since 2008.
A weaker dollar tends to support prices for crude oil and other commodities that are priced in the U.S. currency.
The dollar has come under pressure recently as central banks in Europe and Asia have increased interest rates, while the Federal Reserve is expected to maintain its easy money policies for some time.

The US plans to send military equipment worth $25m to forces trying to topple Gaddafi.
The proposal to send surplus Pentagon equipment, including vehicles, medical supplies, protective vests, binoculars and radios, follows Italy's decision to join Britain and France in sending military advisers to the Libyan opposition and a French pledge to intensify air strikes.
The Libyan government has warned that such moves will further prolong the conflict
and "encourage the other side to be more defiant".

Investors tend to favor gold as a hedge against currency volatility and a store of value due to the metal's historic role as a currency alternative. Gold also drew support from higher crude oil prices, which stoked fears of higher inflation.

Silver futures followed gold higher, with the most-active May delivery contract setting a fresh record at $45.400 per troy ounce, far outpacing the 1980 high of $41.50.
The contract settled at a record $44.461 per troy ounce.
